Lawmakers from Europe have issued a strong warning to both Democrats and Republicans in the United States, emphasizing the urgent need for U.S. aid to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. The lawmakers, including chairs of foreign affairs committees from six European countries and Canada, met with U.S. lawmakers amid negotiations over funding packages for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

UK Member of Parliament Alicia Kearns, chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, delivered a critical message, highlighting the importance of U.S. leadership in a potential conflict with China over Taiwan, while Europe focuses on Ukraine.

The European lawmakers expressed their concerns out of a sense of tough love for their American ally. Kearns advised Democrats to be assertive in shaping their foreign policy agenda and not let Republicans dictate the terms.

The delegation defended Europe’s significant financial contributions to Ukraine, amounting to $160 billion, but acknowledged that America’s military support and global leadership are irreplaceable.

Žygimantas Pavilionis, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Lithuanian Parliament, expressed frustration over the need to continuously urge Washington to take action, emphasizing the importance of a prompt U.S. response in global affairs.

Despite their concerns, the delegation expressed optimism about U.S. bipartisan support and noted their commitment to President Biden’s request for $60 billion to support Ukraine against Russia. Kearns also stated that no Republicans they met with opposed the funding for Ukraine.

During their visit, the delegation held meetings with several U.S. lawmakers, including Sen. Tim Kaine and Representatives Mike Turner, Mario Diaz-Balart, and others. The European lawmakers criticized U.S. politicians for potentially undermining NATO commitments and the risks of such rhetoric in the face of Russian and Chinese ambitions.

Kearns expressed concern over President Biden’s approach to foreign policy considering Republican opposition and highlighted the repercussions of domestic political rhetoric on international relations.

As the upcoming NATO summit hosted by President Biden approaches, the European lawmakers are closely watching to ensure that the U.S. fulfills its commitments to Ukraine, particularly given the ongoing stalemate in the war.
