Special Counsel David Weiss has dismissed accusations made by Hunter Biden’s legal team, stating that the gun charges against him were influenced by right-wing political bias. Hunter Biden’s lawyers are attempting to have the three felony gun charges dismissed, claiming that Weiss succumbed to political pressure from Trump-aligned Republicans.

Weiss, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump, denies facing any internal party pressure to aggressively pursue charges against Hunter Biden. He describes Biden’s claims as unrealistic and more akin to a fictional Hollywood narrative.

Weiss’s office has criticized Biden’s arguments as implausible, especially considering Weiss’s appointment by President Joe Biden’s attorney general. They label Hunter Biden’s motion to dismiss the charges as weak and unsupported by both factual and legal grounds.

Prosecutors have dismissed Biden’s theory of vindictiveness, challenging the suggestion of malicious motives within the Justice Department. The charges against Hunter Biden stem from a gun purchase in 2018 during a period of drug addiction. He is accused of possessing a firearm while falsely denying drug use on a purchase form, violating federal law.

Biden’s defense attorneys maintain that he never used the gun and have entered a plea of not guilty to charges of lying about drug use. If convicted, Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison and fines totaling $750,000.

Prosecutors claim to have substantial evidence against Biden, including the discovery of cocaine traces on a pouch that held the firearm. Hunter Biden has openly discussed his battle with crack cocaine addiction in 2018 but maintains that he did not break the law. He asserts that he has since overcome his addiction and made positive changes in his life.

Apart from the gun charges, Hunter Biden also faces a separate indictment for tax-related offenses, to which he has pleaded not guilty. In addition, House Republicans have contemplated holding Hunter Biden in contempt for defying a subpoena regarding his father’s involvement in his foreign business dealings. However, recent reports suggest that these actions have been temporarily paused due to ongoing negotiations with Biden’s attorneys.
