A coalition of progressive organizations, including Justice Democrats and the Democratic Socialists of America, is calling on President Joe Biden and Democratic leaders to turn down support and donations from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its associated super PACs. These groups have heavily invested in the 2024 U.S. elections, demonstrating their significant financial impact on political races.

There is a noticeable shift within the Democratic Party, with a rising chorus of voices criticizing Biden’s backing of Israel in light of the ongoing conflict with Gaza. This dissent signals a changing landscape within the party.

The recent primaries in Minnesota and Michigan revealed widespread disapproval of U.S. support for Israel, with the election of numerous “uncommitted” delegates in these states. This highlights a strong wave of opposition to the president’s pro-Israel stance.

Ashik Siddique of the Democratic Socialists of America commented on the coalition’s efforts, saying, “The coalition has been in the works for many months to get organizations together that have recognized the destructive influence of AIPAC.”

The coalition is pushing for the Democratic Party to distance itself from AIPAC, citing the organization’s ties to donors who align with Republican interests.

AIPAC maintains that its main criteria for supporting candidates is their commitment to strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship, emphasizing a bipartisan approach.

Noteworthy donations to AIPAC’s affiliated super PAC, the United Democracy Project (UDP), come from backers such as the Marcus Foundation and Elliott Investment Management, both known for their Republican connections.

President Biden has received more than $5.2 million from the pro-Israel lobby over 34 years, making him the highest Congressional recipient, as per OpenSecrets.

AIPAC raised around $24.8 million, while UDP collected about $46.1 million between January 2023 and January 2024, underlining their substantial financial resources.

UDP actively intervened in the California Super Tuesday primary by spending $4.6 million against Democrat Dave Min, illustrating their involvement in influencing election results.

The spotlight is now on the Illinois 7th Congressional District race, where UDP has spent approximately $268,000 against activist Kina Collins, showcasing their persistent role in Democratic primaries.
