Democrats Should Appreciate Biden’s Candidacy, Says NYT Columnist David Brooks

According to New York Times columnist David Brooks, Democrats should recognize and appreciate the fortunate position they are in with President Joe Biden as their candidate. During a discussion on “PBS Newshour” with Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus, Brooks noted that while there have been concerns about Biden’s age and approval ratings, Democrats should consider themselves lucky to have him. He pointed to Biden’s success in the economy and his efforts in international diplomacy as reasons to be grateful. Brooks also predicted that as inflation subsides, Biden’s approval ratings would improve.

One of the key points Brooks made was that Biden’s appeal stretches beyond party lines, making him relatable to moderate independent voters without college degrees. He urged Democrats to recognize the cultural messages Biden sends to this group and to show more gratitude for his contributions. Marcus agreed with Brooks, cautioning that if another Democrat challenged Biden’s candidacy, it could create divisions within the party.

In contrast to these optimistic views, a recent poll conducted by The Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed that only 36% of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of the economy, which is lower than his overall approval rating of 42%. The poll also revealed that 55% of Democrats do not want Biden to run for president again, although 82% said they would vote for him if nominated. These findings highlight the varying sentiments within the Democratic Party and the importance of acknowledging Biden’s strengths while navigating these differences.
