Israel’s Defense Minister Stands Firm in Justifying Prolonged Conflict, Highlights Complex Nature of the Enemy
Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, has defended Israel’s actions amidst the ongoing conflict with Hamas. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Gallant asserted that Israel is not fighting a single enemy but rather an axis of adversaries. He drew attention to the devastating Hamas attacks on October 7, which claimed the lives of over 1,200 people and took 200 individuals hostage. Gallant argued that this marked the bloodiest day for the Jewish community since the end of World War II, providing further justification for Israel’s subsequent military intervention in Gaza, despite facing international criticism.
Additionally, Gallant underscored the importance of countering enemies allied with Iran, which supports Hamas. He stated, “The world needs to understand—this is different.” As a key member of Israel’s war cabinet, alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Unity Party head Benny Gantz, Gallant has played a crucial role in shaping and implementing the country’s military strategy.
