Lawyer for Co-Defendant in Trump Case Aims to Remove Fani Willis from Election Fraud Legal Proceedings
Ashleigh Merchant, representing a co-defendant in Donald Trump’s case, has developed a strategy to oust Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney, from the election fraud case in Georgia. Merchant believes elements in testimonies, such as those from Wade’s former divorce lawyer, could weaken the prosecution’s credibility in the Trump case.
The case involves 18 co-defendants, including Donald Trump, facing a 41-count indictment for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 Georgia election results with Fani Willis leading the prosecution efforts. While Trump pleads not guilty to all charges, labeling the case as politically motivated, a recent ethics hearing saw Judge Scott McAfee ruling in favor of Willis remaining in her position, despite allegations made by co-defendant Michael Roman against her and special prosecutor Nathan Wade.
After the ethics hearing outcome, Trump’s legal team has decided to appeal, concentrating on claims of forensic impropriety and Willis’ connection with Wade. Ashleigh Merchant, in an interview with CNN’s Laura Coates, emphasized concerns regarding the “forensic misconduct evidence” in the case against Willis and her association with Wade, which could impact the prosecution’s credibility. Merchant pointed out certain testimonies, like that of Wade’s ex-divorce attorney, as factors diminishing the prosecution’s trustworthiness in the Trump case.
Merchant stressed the importance of an impartial and fair prosecutor, highlighting instances that she believes cast doubt on the prosecution’s reliability. Trump’s lead defense counsel, Steve Sadow, echoed the team’s commitment to leveraging all legal means to challenge the case’s legitimacy.
