Nancy Pelosi Calls for Support at White House Event Celebrating Inflation Reduction Act

During a commemoration of the one-year anniversary of the Inflation Reduction Act at the White House, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi aimed to garner backing and admiration for the legislation. Alongside Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Pelosi emphasized various facets of the act, particularly its emphasis on tackling climate change, which she described as a matter of health, economics, and morality.

Observing the lack of applause from the audience during her remarks, Pelosi intervened, stating, “I believe that deserves applause.” She employed this strategy later in her speech as well, urging clapping for legislative endeavors and acknowledging key individuals involved in the process.

This isn’t the first instance where Pelosi has prompted applause at a White House event. Last year, during a celebration of President Biden’s signing of the Inflation Reduction Act, Pelosi similarly rallied the audience to applaud by designating specific statements as “applause lines.”

This approach of eliciting applause from audiences has drawn comparisons to a comparable incident involving former Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush during the 2016 election, when he requested applause from his supporters at a campaign event.
