In a candid interview with NewsNation, former national security adviser John Bolton didn’t hold back in his scathing critique of former President Trump’s foreign policy. Bolton characterized it as unpredictable and driven solely by self-interest. He expressed deep concern over the lack of a coherent philosophy or policy direction in national security during Trump’s presidency.

Bolton specifically pointed out Trump’s controversial decisions, such as striking a deal with the Taliban and advocating for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, which he deemed a catastrophic mistake. He also voiced his dissatisfaction with Trump’s approach towards Iran and cautioned against the potential threats that a second Trump term could pose to the very existence of NATO.

Although many Republicans viewed Trump’s foreign policy record positively, Bolton offered a different perspective. He urged caution in giving too much credit to Trump’s administration, as he believed that some decisions were inconsistent with the president’s initial intentions.

Bolton’s criticism of Trump didn’t end after leaving the administration in 2019. He went on to write a memoir criticizing Trump’s decision-making, openly referring to him as a “cancer on the Republican Party.”

Making a strong case against a second term for Trump, Bolton argued that he is fundamentally unfit to shape national security policy. The former national security adviser remains resolute in his concerns regarding Trump’s approach to national security.
