Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand have called on the U.S. Air Force to modernize the aging fleet of LC-130 Hercules “Skibird” aircraft, stressing the importance of these planes for missions in the Arctic and Antarctica. Schumer and Gillibrand highlighted the unique capabilities of the aircraft operated by the 109th Airlift Wing in Schenectady County, emphasizing their crucial role in reaching remote areas with snow and ice.

The senators have urged the Air Force to replace the aging fleet to enhance national security and support scientific research. In a letter to U.S. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, they emphasized the aircraft’s decades of service and the urgent need for newer planes to sustain important missions.

Schumer emphasized the strategic significance of the LC-130H aircraft in upholding U.S. presence in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. He pointed out that these aircraft are vital for national security and essential for conducting scientific research, underscoring America’s leadership in these critical areas.

The senators stressed that the outdated fleet hinders the operational capabilities of the Air National Guard, posing a national security risk as the U.S. competes with other global powers in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The modernization of the fleet is essential to ensure the safety and effectiveness of military personnel in executing important missions.

Schumer has committed to using all available resources to secure the replacement of the LC-130H fleet, recognizing the bipartisan consensus on the necessity of supporting America’s strategic and scientific interests in polar regions. The 109th Airlift Wing, based in Stratton, plays a crucial role as the operator of these specialized aircraft, highlighting the urgency of having a fleet of updated planes to carry out unique missions efficiently.

Beyond just updating hardware, replacing the LC-130H aircraft is about maintaining U.S. leadership in Arctic and Antarctic exploration and research. The upgrade would guarantee sustained assistance for critical missions in these remote regions.
