Significant Decrease in Border Crossings at California Entry Point

A recent report by Mexico’s National Institute of Migration (INM) revealed a sharp decline in illegal border crossings through Jacumba, California. Specifically, crossings at Jacumba’s Shift Crossings near Jacumba, east of San Diego, have plummeted by almost 90%, indicating a notable shift in migration patterns. This area, which was previously a major route for illegal migrants, has seen a remarkable decrease in activity.

Mr. David Pérez Tejada, the head of INM in Baja California, attributed this significant drop in border entries to the heightened presence of Mexican border patrols. He stated that these intensified patrols have effectively deterred attempted crossings since December.

While specific numbers were not disclosed, a spokesperson for the U.S. Border Patrol acknowledged a significant slowdown in migrant activity in the region. It is reported that migrants have now begun exploring alternative routes to evade the increased security measures.

The recent surge in arrests for illegal entry into the U.S. in December was followed by a sharp decline in January. This fluctuation underscores the ongoing challenges in border security and immigration policies, which have become focal points in the current political landscape, particularly in the context of the presidential election.

President Biden has called for a bipartisan effort to address border security issues and bridge the divide on immigration policies. In his State of the Union address, he emphasized the urgency of finding solutions to these challenges, criticized the political gridlock, and expressed his administration’s commitment to tackling the issues at hand.
