During a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of Palestine achieving statehood. He believes that this is crucial for Israel to attain genuine security. Blinken acknowledged the challenges in reaching a two-state solution and stressed the need for open-mindedness and difficult decision-making.

Blinken also highlighted the primary security concern in the Middle East, which is Iran and its proxies, including the Houthi rebels in Yemen. He acknowledged the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas and suggested that integrating Israel into the Middle Eastern region could help isolate Iran and its threats, thereby mitigating regional tensions.

The urgency of forming partnerships in the Middle East was also emphasized by Blinken, who described the situation as a human tragedy affecting both Israelis and Palestinians. His recent visit to the Middle East, where he met with leaders from nine countries, provided him with valuable insights and informed his observations.

The presence of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan at the Davos event underscored the international interest in the region’s issues. Prince Faisal bin Farhan echoed Blinken’s sentiments on regional peace, stating that peace, including for Israel, depends on the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Blinken described the ongoing conflict in Gaza as “gut-wrenching” and reflected on the human cost of the war initiated by Hamas. He expressed his heartbreak over the suffering in Gaza, which has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, displacement, injuries, and severe food shortages. Almost every Middle Eastern country is seeking an end to the conflict, as reported by Reuters.
