During the closing arguments of E. Jean Carroll’s defamation trial, former President Donald Trump made a sudden exit from the courtroom. His departure came as Carroll’s attorney accused him of habitual dishonesty and a sense of being above the law.

In her closing statement, Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, emphasized Trump’s ongoing defamation of her client throughout the trial. She made it clear that Carroll’s allegations of sexual abuse were truthful, despite Trump’s vehement denials.

Kaplan pointed out Trump’s departure as evidence of his belief in his own invincibility. She suggested that his wealth and power played a significant role in influencing his behavior towards Carroll.

After about an hour, Trump returned to the courtroom to listen to his attorney’s closing arguments, following which the jury commenced their deliberations. Throughout the trial, Judge Kaplan repeatedly issued warnings and reprimands to ensure the proceedings remained orderly.

This trial is one of several legal battles that Trump is currently facing while engaging in his re-election campaign. The outcomes of these trials, including this one, hold great implications for his future.

Kaplan urged the jury to impose substantial punitive damages, highlighting Trump’s significant claimed assets as a basis for such penalties. On the other hand, Trump’s defense, led by Alina Habba, contended that he was merely expressing his version of the truth, a claim that the judge struck from the record.

Habba also challenged Carroll’s claim of emotional damages, insinuating that she was seeking public attention rather than justice. In response, Carroll’s attorney, Shawn Crowley, asserted that Trump’s defamation of her client had been proven beyond doubt. She emphasized that Trump had no right to spread lies under the guise of self-defense.

With the conclusion of the closing arguments, the jury began their deliberations. Trump’s testimony during the trial was limited due to a previous ruling that established his liability. It is important to note that a previous jury had already found Trump liable for abuse and defamation, and the current trial is now focused on determining the appropriate compensation for Carroll.

Trump has attended most of this trial, in contrast to his absence during a previous trial last year. The proceedings experienced a brief postponement due to health concerns but have now reached a pivotal juncture.
