UK Defense Secretary Warns Putin After Ukraine Sinks Russian Warship
The UK’s defense secretary has delivered a strong message to Russian President Vladimir Putin in response to reports of Ukraine destroying a Russian Black Sea Fleet patrol ship, which has led to increased tensions in the area.
In a recent incident, Ukraine conducted a drone strike targeting the Sergey Kotov, the newest patrol ship in the Black Sea Fleet, further escalating the conflict with Russia.
Grant Shapps, the UK Secretary of State for Defense, warned Putin on social media that “the Black Sea is not safe for Putin’s navy,” underscoring the strategic significance of Ukraine’s actions in the region.
Shapps pointed out the recent advancements made by Ukraine with Western support, making it possible for them to challenge the once-dominant Russian fleet in the Black Sea.
This incident has prompted Shapps to advocate for additional military aid to Ukraine, believing that a stronger Ukrainian Armed Forces could achieve substantial victories against Russian forces in the ongoing conflict.
The attack targeted a Sergey Kotov ship from the Project 22160 series of patrol vessels, causing significant damage. While these ships are valued at over $65 million and can carry nearly 80 passengers, specific details about the crew on board are currently unknown.
Ukrainian military intelligence confirmed the drone strikes on the Sergey Kotov within their territorial waters, though official statements from Russian authorities are still pending.
Andriy Yermak, an official from Ukrainian President Zelensky’s office, expressed strong opposition to the presence of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Ukrainian territory, hinting at potential future confrontations in the region.
